Supper Social: Winter Solstice

image

The Winter Solstice. Not only the shortest day of the year, but also the traditional time when the majority of wine and beer made during the fall was finally fermented and ready for drinking.  The reversal of the Sun’s ebbing presence also symbolized a new beginning, the rebirth of the sun gods.

In honor of the Winter Solstice, I hosted a Bruce’s Buddies Supper Social.  And with the eminent Mayan Apocalypse fast approaching, I suggested a white-elephant gift exchange.  Kelly [happily] ended up with a box of Nerds.

July 4th Block Party / Sidewalk Potluck BBQ

It all started with a flier.  In fact, a lot of fliers.  A neighbor on my street, Occidental Blvd. in south Silver Lake, canvassed the entire block with fliers advertising a July 4th Community Block Party.  She didn’t have to ask twice.  I immediately coordinated with Graham Keegan downstairs to set up a Sidewalk Potluck BBQ and Pool Party.

But we didn’t have a pool.  But we did have Graham’s pick-up truck and some plastic tarp.  Pick-Up Truck Pool party!

I took a walk up Occidental Blvd. to see what activities other houses on the block were hosting.

Met some of the neighbors on the street where I’ve lived for over 2 years, but have never met.  It turns out that many of the families that live on Occidental have been there for 3 generations.  Aunts live across the street from nephews, and grandmas lives next door to grandsons.  There is a real sense of community, and small town feel on this urban street.  Exactly what I’ve been looking for in a neighborhood.

Met some great neighbors, and went over to Elf Cafe for $5 Falafel night.

Supper Social : BBQ Edition

Threw a Supper Social in honor of the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.  What better way to celebrate the Los Angeles summer than with a BBQ in the bountiful yard of an old victorian house in Angelino Heights.  Thanks to buddy Kathleen Miles for hosting.

The Summer Solstice.  Not only the longest day of the year, but also the traditional magic hour for meeting new lovers.

Supper Social

Bohemianism thrives on adversity.  You have to have a concentration of people practicing their arts, people with superior endowments who don’t necessarily fit into society and who are in fact often engaged in rebellions against convention, creating a symbiotic society where not only can they go and eat at each others’ houses when they’re hungry, but where they can also spark each other and be each others’ critical audience.   -  Jake Zeitlin

Launched Bruce’s Buddies with a Supper Social on the roof.  Cultivating community, one potluck at a time.

To many more!
