cicLAvia

My favorite day of the year!  A re-envisioning of LA’s streets.  Such as Somerset playing cello with his band along New Hampshire…….

….. And Greg Wittman sitting with his house plants and Chester on the 7th St. bridge over the 110……..

…… Or LAPD lined up outside the Coca-Cola Bottling Plant on Central Ave.

Always something new, everytime.  I volunteered this year, and would recommend anyone to volunteer in April, at the next cicLAvia.

glendale night ride

Every Tuesday Night
8pm
Glendale Public Library

Friend Erik started a bike ride in his hometown of Glendale. We rode past some historical spots in this quite city. Like the site of the first Baskin Robbins. And the Richardson House, one of the oldest wood frame structures in Glendale. And Forest Lawn Memorial Park where MJ is buried!

We ended at Los Feliz’s India Sweets and Spices for some last minute Ice Cream.  Our bikes were happy next to the cans of tomatoes.

11.6 mile architectural bike ride with Brian of Bikehaus as part of the East Hollywood ArtCycle.

Around 40 riders convened at the LA Cahuenga Branch Library, and headed north to Barnsdall Art Park.

Headed back to the ArtCycle event.  If you know me, you know I’m a sucker for any event which closes off LA streets to cars.  Santa Monica Blvd was closed between Vermont and Virgil, bringing to “light” the city’s Bureau of Street Lighting yard, which many in the community want to make into an urban green park.

The LA Marathon is this Sunday. Which means the streets will be closed off to vehicular traffic for 26.1 miles starting Sunday morning. Which means cyclists can ride the entire 26.1 miles from downtown LA to Santa Monica, without traffic or stop lights. Only once a year.

new park, eagle rock bikeathon with Phil, and HALA!

attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new parkman triangle park, located at Silver Lake Blvd and Parkman.  i volunteered a couple weekends in March and April with a team of other volunteers, hauling dirt, planting flora, and setting stones into this awkward corner site.  The project was spearheaded by some community members and silver lake architecture and M&A friend John Southern of Urban Operations, with funding from a Community Beautification Grant.

before.  the local trash dump and occasional garage sale site.

proposed site plan

the ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by city council president Eric Garcetti and Michael Espinoza.  I’ve heard Eric speak a couple of times at different events.  he looks like the dad from Modern Family.  What a great speaker!  I don’t even know what he actually does as city council president.  But if his job is to solely give speeches, then he for sure deserves our tax payer dollars!

As a local resident of Echo Park, he spoke about “urban acupuncture” and the improvement of neighborhoods through parks.  He even suggested taking over JIFFY LUBE at the junction for the people of the city!   How could you hate him?  He also started speaking about the agency of citizens to change things in the city they are unhappy about.  In his words, you get what you give.  In this case, LA supports and helps projects that are spearheaded by its own citizens.  A government by and for the people!

in the afternoon, went on a bike ride from downtown to eagle rock.  two songs, blasting from passing cars, that made my day.

Blondie - Heart Of Glass by 80’s Mau

Keith Sweat - Nobody by Babyshack

on the way through chinatown, Phil brought me up Solano Ave. to the Solano Canyon Community Garden.  gate was locked, so we jumped the fence.  phil studied the site for a project at sciarc.  located in an interstitial space between the 110 freeway and solano canyon houses, the garden sits on the hills which the 110 cuts through.  portions of it are even located above the tunnels of the 110 north freeway.  urban farm win!

Mike Kelly and Michael Smith : A Voyage of Growth and Discovery at the Farley Storage Building, Eagle Rock.

Kevin, Genevieve and Rachel came over for dinner before Hercules and Love Affair.  kevin once again amazed me with a sweet and tangy chicken spinach salad.  i learned later that he bought it pre-marinated from TJ.  Still, not bad.  Rice, White Eggplant with onions, squash and soy sauce, quinoa with broccoli, tomatoes and lemon, and corn on the cob with chile lime sauce.

i apparently have very thick floss. Kevin notified me.

amazing non-stop dance party show.  all the new tracks were rhythmically solid.  although andy butler is in essence a DJ, the show was anything but produced.  Shaun Wright, Aerea Negrot, and veteran Kim Ann Foxman were constants on the stage, providing solid vocals, amazing energy, and sweat.  sweet sweet sweat.

outside of the echoplex, learned that my dad broke his leg in a freak golf-cart accident earlier in the day.

went to the echo for funky sole night.  never knew there was a back patio.  drank water, but decided to leave.  we were not in the mood to listen to anymore loud music.  so we went back to my place, ate the leftovers from dinner.  and then they fell asleep while i washed dishes.  i love my friends.
